Gunjur is set to face off against Sanyang in a highly anticipated Kombo South Derby at the Gunjur Nyamina Mini Stadium on Friday, October 18, 2024.
The match marks the beginning of Gunjur’s 2024 campaign in the West Coast Region (WCR) Zonal Football Tournament following their recent triumph in the WCR Zonal Football Super Cup, where they defeated last year’s champions, Foni.
Led by Coach Sulayman Barrow, Gunjur’s zonal team is looking to build on their Super Cup victory and launch a strong bid for the 2024 zonal title. Their first challenge comes from Sanyang, their Kombo South neighbours, who also boast a solid track record in the competition.
Both teams have impressive histories in the WCR Zonal Football Tournament. Gunjur claimed victory in the inaugural edition, while Sanyang won the second edition. With both teams vying for a second title, the stakes are high. Gunjur, still eager to avenge their loss to Foni in the 2023 final, will be especially determined to start this season on a strong note.
Following the derby, Gunjur will travel for an away match against CENTRAL 2 at the Marakisa Football Field on 27th October, continuing their journey in the tournament.
As a result of this important fixture, two local Nawettan matches, which were scheduled for Thursday, October 17, and Friday, October 18, have been cancelled. These matches included a showdown between Gambian Dutch Lions and Black and White FA, as well as a match between Senior Players and Tech World FC. The Gunjur Sports Committee Secretariat confirmed these changes in a recent statement.
The Kombo South Derby promises to deliver an exciting and intense battle, with both teams eager to prove their dominance in the region. Football fans in Gunjur are eagerly anticipating the match, hoping their team can push towards reclaiming the title this season.
