Gunjur began their 2024 WCR Zonal Football Championship campaign in emphatic fashion, securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Kombo South neighbours, Sanyang. This win follows their recent Super Cup triumph, where they defeated last year’s champions, Foni, setting high expectations for the Dabanani outfit this season.
The game, played at the Gunjur Nyamina Mini Stadium, saw a lively first half with Gunjur dominating possession. Minutes before the break, Bubacarr Jassey delivered a brilliant cross, which was expertly converted by Dawda Sowe, putting Gunjur ahead 1-0 as the teams went into halftime.
As the second half progressed, Gunjur remained in control and doubled their lead just before the 80th minute. This time, Jassey turned from provider to scorer, finding the back of the net to make it 2-0, leaving Sanyang with a mountain to climb.
Despite Sanyang’s efforts to fight back and salvage something from the game, Gunjur’s defense held firm, denying any real chances for their opponents to threaten. Gunjur sealed the win in the dying moments of the game when substitute Omar Jammeh added a third goal, ensuring a comfortable 3-0 victory for the home side.
