Several months ago, Gunjur Online highlighted the severe waste management crisis plaguing the community. Families living near an uncontrolled dumping site have been suffering due to the lack of proper waste collection and management services in Gunjur.
Despite raising the issue with an individual closely working at the Brikama Area Council (BAC), the response indicated that local representatives should lobby BAC to address the situation.
Health Hazards and Community Impact
A local resident who contacted Gunjur Online told us he had to evacuate his entire family due to the health hazards posed by the burning waste. The dangerous fumes from the dump site, located in the heart of the community, have created a dire situation for all residents. The ongoing exposure to these fumes poses significant health risks, particularly respiratory issues and other long-term health problems.
Call to Action
We once again implore Chairman Yankuba Darboe and his council to take immediate action to address the waste collection, management, and disposal issues in Gunjur. As one of the largest tax revenue contributors under BAC, the people of Gunjur deserve to live in a healthy and safe environment. Effective waste management solutions must be implemented without further delay to protect the well-being of the community.
The health and safety of Gunjur’s residents must be a priority. Immediate and effective measures are essential to resolve this crisis and ensure a cleaner, healthier future for the community.
