The United States Embassy in The Gambia has boosted the development efforts of the sprawling coastal settlement of Gunjur with a grant of $5,735.Gunjur received the generous cash amount after being awarded the 2023 Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Fund Program grant.
The D350,000 cash boost came on the heels of the visit of officials of the Embassy to the Gunjur Health Centre to have a first hand experience of the work being carried out by the Gunjur VDC in collaboration with the Gunjur Development Fund (GDF) as contained in a project funding proposal submitted to the Embassy by VDC Chairman Tijani Bojang.
The Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Fund Program supports communities and organisations throughout The Gambia by providing funding up to $6,000 U.S. Dollars in small-scale assistance to community-led initiatives who have successfully submitted the grant application.
According to the grant application guidelines, competitive projects are those that:
Improve basic economic or social conditions at the local community by funding the expansion of an existing project.
Have the potential to produce employment and marketable skills.
Assist vulnerable groups.
Support high-impact, quick-implementation activities which benefit a large number of people within one year without requiring further assistance.
Have the potential to generate additional income; and
Involve a significant local contribution in cash, labor, or material, and are within the ability of the local community to operate and maintain.
In 2023, Gunjurians both in Gambia and diaspora raised over D2,000000 (Two million) through individual cobntributions for the sole purpose of supporting and funding self-help community projects in Gunjur. The funds raised were used for critical major road rehabilitation works, construction of a blood bank at the Gunjur Health Centre, construction of the first ever VDC office among others.
