Turkish Ambassador Fahri Türker Oba visits Gunjur, holds discussions with village leaders

Gunjur, The Gambia - The Turkish Ambassador to The Gambia, Fahri Türker Oba has visited the sprawling coastal settlement of Gunjur on Friday, 19th July 2024. The Turkish Diplomat first arrived at the Gunjur Central Mosque where he performed the Friday Prayers before proceeding to visit various places in the sprawling coastal settlement.

Ambassador Fahri Türker Oba was in Gunjur on the invitation of Dr Amadou Scattred Janneh. While in Gunjur, Ambassador Oba visited and held discussions with village leaders at Foday Kunda before proceeding to the Sand Mosque at Gunjur beach to inspect the beach Mosque where a Quran memorisation school is currently being housed.

Speaking at the events, Fahri Türker Oba, conveyed his sincere appreciation for the warm reception from the people of Gunjur.

 

The ambassador expressed profound gratitude for the hospitality shown during his visit, emphasising the honour he felt in being welcomed so graciously by the community. The heartfelt gestures and welcoming spirit of the people of Gunjur left a lasting impression, strengthening the bond between the ambassador and his hosts.


Speaking to Gunjuronline, Ambassador Oba's key focus was the necessity of fostering capacity building to address challenges and empower local communities through education, enabling them to take ownership and drive positive change.

 

Having arrived in Gunjur, the ambassador wanted to understand the problems the community faces, especially in the area where students used the beach Mosque as a classroom. When asked about providing financial or material help to renovate the beach Mosque and ensure its upkeep for the community post-visit, the ambassador highlighted the complexity of the issue. He indicated that this task goes beyond the embassy's capacity alone and may involve collaboration with business figures perhaps.

The ambassador emphasised the substantial nature of the mosque, indicating that further assessment and cooperation are needed to address this significant endeavor.

 

Further commenting on his visit to Gunjur on the Facebook page of the Embassy of Turkey in The Gambia,  Ambassador Oba wrote:

The events were also attended by prominent members of the community of Gunjur, including the MP for Kombo South, Hon. Kebba K. Barrow, President of the Supreme Islamic Council of The Gambia, Alhagie Essa Darboe, Imam Ratib of Gunjur, Alhagie Muhammed Lamin Touray, Head of Foday Kunda Kabilo, Karamo "Bana" Touray, Local Councillor, Hon. Momodou Charreh Gibba, Councillor of Elders of Gunjur, Imam and Alkalo Dembo Darboe, among others.
