Supreme Islamic Council President, Muhammed Lamin Touray, has declared that the persecuted minority Islamic sect called Ahmadiyaa fall outside of the spectrum of true Muslims.
In his testimony before the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations commission (TRRC) skippered by Essa Faal, the Gunjur-born and Saudi-trained Imam explained:
“They are not part of it because they don’t want to be part of us. All the other sects like Sunnis, Qadriyaa and Tijaniyaa are part of us.
The Ahmadiyaa wants to be on their own using the name of Islam when in reality they are not part of it. Even a political party will never allow another to use their name without being part of them, more so a religious body”.
Imam Touray got ambushed by Essa Faal at this point who pointed out the law did not allow the council to impose bans on religious practice.
But the Imam from the sprawling coastal town of Gunjur known for producing erudite Islamic scholars riposted:
“The job of Supreme Islamic Council is to ensure stability and order. The Ahmadiyaa were taking away the role of praying for the dead from people entrusted with such roles. The Ahmadiyaa were taking away their deceased members and disgracing Imams”.
