Kajabang Sports Committee Appeals Land Dispute Verdict Against Gunjur Sports Committee

Gunjur, October 27 2024 — In an ongoing legal battle over land ownership, the Kajabang Sports Committee has filed an appeal at the High Court against the Gunjur Sports Committee following a District Tribunal’s ruling that granted the football field in Kajabang to Gunjur Sports Committee.

The tribunal ruling did not go down well with Kajabang Sports Commitee, leading them to take further legal action at the High Court to reclaim the field.

The disputed football field, located in Kajabang, is considered vital for community sports and youth development for future generation of Gunjur. Kaajabang is a suburb of Gunjur and situated around the Gunjur beach.

Situated near the coast, the disputed land was given to the community of Gunjur by the Domung (Sanyang Kunda) family to be used as a recreational ground. Residents of Kajabang began using the land as a football field for several years.

The land fell into dispute between Gunjur Sports Connittee and Kajabang Sports Committe resulting in the matter to be decided on the district tribunal.

However, the District Tribunal ruled in favour of the Gunjur Sports Committee, deeming them the rightful custodians of the land. The verdict did not sit well with the Kajabang Sports Committee, which has argued that they have an established claim to the land, rooted in longstanding community use and local significance.

In response to the Tribunal’s ruling, the Kajabang Sports Committee quickly filed an appeal at the High Court, expressing hope that the judicial system will reevaluate the decision. They argue that the ruling overlooked key historical, geographical and communal aspects of the land, which they believe justifies their claim.

The High Court has scheduled the appeal hearing for Monday, October 28, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in Banjul. This session will mark a critical point in the dispute, as both parties present their cases before a higher authority, seeking a resolution that will clarify the future use and management of the field.

Local residents and sports enthusiasts from both Kajabang and Gunjur will be closely watching the outcome.
