News reports percolating through from Italy indicate a Gambian national has perished in a fire outbreak.
He allegedly died in a fire that broke out in the ghetto of Borgo Mezzanone at the border between Foggia and Manfredonia in Southern Italy. Samara Saho, a 26-year-old from Gambia had been living in one of the shelters since his asylum claim had been denied and he had become an irregular immigrant.
Meanwhile, Italian Interior minster Mario Salvini intimates that close to 100,000 illegal immigrants live in Italy, a significant reduction from the previous figure of half a million he touted.
His words:
“Combining data from the last 4 and a half years, the number of illegal immigrants in Italy does not exceed 90,000; the number clandestine immigrant in our country is much lower than we might have presumed.”
