Gunjur Welfare Association (GYA) hands over first ever local mortuary to the community

Updated: Mar 20, 2023

At a colourful ceremony at Gunjur Health Centre, Dr Nyambi Touray on Sunday handed over the keys of the Gunjur mortuary to the Alikali of Gunjur; Sheikh Dembo Darboe.

For the past twenty-one years, GYA tasked themselves with preparing all deaths from Gunjur and Nyofelleh who die at EFSTH for proper burial. As populations grow, the death rates at the capital’s main referral hospital also increased that put a lots of pressure on the finances of GYA, hence the need to build a local mortuary where our deceased can be prepared for their final journey, the facility should also be used for storing local deaths before their burial.

Today’s landmark event was attended by the Alkali; Mr Dembo Darboe, Imam Ratib; Muhammad Lamin Touray, President of Supreme Islamic Council; Sheikh Essa Darboe, Dr Nyambi Touray, Mr Karamba Touray, Dr Lamin J. Darboe, Head of Women Loli Jammeh, youth groups and other dignitaries.

One after the other, speakers heaped praises on GYA membership for coming up with such a magnificent project. The chairman of GYA, Mr Omar Jaata called on local youths to join GYA to take over the ageing founding members.

The facility boasts two washing areas, two body-holding rooms fitted with ACs, a hot water source, and a waiting area. GYA draw their funds from core membership, general membership and donors all on voluntary bases.
