Gunjur United secured their first win of the 2024/25 Gambia Football Federation (GFF) Division 2 League campaign with a determined 2-0 victory against Serekunda FC in Week 4 at the Late Ousman Saho Field in Yundum.
The Coastal Boys were eager to bounce back after their first home defeat to Unique Global FC in Week 3, and head coach Bubacarr Bojang made significant changes to his starting lineup. Notably, Selestine Jatta was rested, with Pateh Joof making his debut in the backline.
The tactical adjustments paid dividends early on, as Gunjur United took the lead in the 26th minute through midfield maestro Omar Jabang. Seven minutes later, Lamin Touray doubled the advantage with a clinical finish in the 33rd minute, giving the Dabanani outfit a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, Serekunda FC intensified their efforts, applying pressure in search of a way back into the game. However, Gunjur United showcased defensive solidity and discipline, refusing to allow their opponents a foothold. To maintain their lead, Gunjur made substitutions, with first goal-scorer Omar Jabang making way for Musa Jammeh as the team looked to manage the game.
Despite Serekunda FC’s attacking changes and late pressure, Gunjur United held firm. Their mix of solid defensive work and purposeful counter-attacking play ensured the Coastal Boys returned home with all three points.
The win was a vital morale boost for Gunjur United, marking their first victory of the season and moving them up to 9th place in the league standings with 5 points from three games.
Previously languishing in 15th place, the team now looks to build on this performance as they continue their campaign in the Second Division.
This hard-fought victory highlights Gunjur United’s determination to compete at the top end of the table as they set their sights on upcoming fixtures.
