By Sainey Darboe:
US-based Gunjur native, Abbas Jaffuneh, has bagged a Master of Science (MSc) in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practice (PMHNP) from the University of North Dakota.
Abbas Jaffuneh commenced his academic odyssey from Gunjur Primary School in 1984, going through St Peter’s, Gunjur secondary and Muslim high schools, culminating in graduation in 1996. Migration, with its inherent privations and deprivations, did not stop Abbas from pursuing his academic goals.
Between 2005 to 2008, he enrolled for and completed an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) at Minneapolis Community and Technical College and Hennepin Technical College. While an Associate degree represents the denouement of an academic journey for many, Abbas yearned for a deeper dive in the sea of knowledge in his chosen field. He would go on to bag an Associate of Science degree(RN) from South Central College Faribault which he attended from 2008 to 2010.
After a two-year hiatus to garner the much needed practical experience under his belt, he went back to school and earned his Bachelor of Science degree (BSN) Magna cum laude from Bemidji State University which he attended between 2012 to 2014. Not intimidated by rigours of academic work and recognising the need to maintain the momentum, he would go on to study for a Master of Science degree (MSc) in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practice (PMHNP), University of North Dakota from 2017 to 2019. He is a PMHNP Doctoral candidate with three semesters to completion.
When Gunjur Online asked what motivated him in choosing a career in Psychiatric Mental Health, Mr Jaffuneh revealed:
"The brain (our mind) is the most powerful instrument that we have as far as our functioning is concerned. There is no single complex organism that does not utilise the brain to live, thus it is evident in our case as social beings that we would not be able to do the simplest of things that makes us so when the mind malfunctions. This is what attracted me to psychiatry”.
While proffering advice to budding academics, he said: "The rapid advancement of technical know-how and the ubiquitous proliferation of social media are both a blessing and curse for all of us but more so the upcoming academically minded; utilise these tools to your advantage; if you couldn’t help but to take what they accord you, please verify! Another and maybe the toughest challenge they come with is their potential to distract and derail; find a mentor; a motivator; healthy coping skills to go to when the going gets rough. You’ll be successful if you are determined; plan, work hard but wisely and stay the course!"
With that, Gunjur News Online congratulates Abass Jaffuneh on his academic achievement and wishes him all the very best in his Doctoral candidacy.
