Gunjur, The Gambia - In a match filled with intense action and drama, Gunjur Dabanani FC secured the 2024 Gambia Football Federation (GFF) Beach Soccer Championship title, defeating Kunkujang Friends FC in a thrilling encounter.
Played on the sandy shores of Palma Rima, on Sunday 18th August 2024, the final ended in a dramatic 6-6 draw in regulation time, with the champions being decided after an electrifying 6-5 victory in the post-match penalty shootout.
The game captivated the hundreds of spectators in attendance, who were treated to an end-to-end spectacle of beach soccer at its finest. Gunjur Dabanani FC and Kunkujang Friends FC both displayed impressive skill and stamina throughout the match, with the scoreline remaining close from start to finish. The intensity of the game reflected the high stakes, as both teams fought to claim the prestigious title.
As the match reached the end with a deadlocked 6-6 score, the atmosphere became charged with anticipation for the decisive penalty shootout. Gunjur Dabanani FC held their nerve in the pressure-filled moment, edging out Kunkujang Friends FC by a single goal to claim the championship title with a 6-5 penalty shootout win.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including GFF President Lamin Kaba Bajo, Chairman of the Beach Soccer Committee Abou Khan, and GFF General Secretary Lamin M. Jassey. Also in attendance was Abdoulie Ceesay, Director of Competitions for WAFU Zone A, who, along with other executive members, watched the thrilling final unfold.
For their victory, Gunjur Dabanani FC was awarded a giant trophy, gold medals, and a cash prize of D75,000. Runners-up Kunkujang Friends FC, who put up a valiant fight, were awarded D50,000 and silver medals. Meanwhile, Steve Biko and Tujereng, who finished in third and fourth places respectively, took home D30,000 and D20,000 respectively in prize money, alongside their bronze medals.
The 2024 GFF Beach Soccer Championship not only showcased the growing popularity of beach soccer in Gambia but also highlighted the fierce competition between the teams.
