GFF Division Two: Gunjur United Hold Madina United to a 1-1 Draw in Season Opener

Football - Gunjur United, nicked-named as the Coastal Boys, kicked off their 2024/25 GFF Second Division League campaign with a 1-1 draw against FA Cup winners Madina United.

The match, held at the newly inaugurated Nyamina Football Grounds, saw Gunjur United rally late to secure a point in front of their home fans.


First Half: Madina United Take the Lead


Madina United started strong, capitalising on early opportunities to put Gunjur United under pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 15th minute when they found the back of the net, silencing the home crowd. Despite Gunjur’s attempts to equalise, the visitors held onto their 1-0 lead until halftime.


Second Half: Coastal Boys Fight Back


The second half saw Gunjur United come out with renewed determination. Seeking to turn the game around, their coach made a tactical substitution, bringing on Tony Jarjue for Sheriffo Keita. The change proved decisive, as Jarjue made an immediate impact on the game.

In the 86th minute, Jarjue delivered a spectacular long-range strike, sending the home fans into raptures. The late goal not only leveled the score but also energised the Coastal Boys, who avoided starting their campaign with a home defeat.


A Promising Start for Gunjur United


Although Gunjur United couldn’t claim all three points, the result showcased their resilience and ability to compete against tough opponents. Their performance at the Nyamina Football Grounds promises an exciting season ahead as they aim to build on this solid start.
