The ongoing fibre optic installation project by Gamtel in Gunjur has sparked growing safety concerns as trenches remain uncovered, causing serious injuries to unsuspecting residents. The lack of barriers or warning signs has led to multiple accidents, particularly at night when visibility is low.

Serious Injuries Reported

A few years ago, a similar tragic incident involved the late Imam of Gunjur, Alhagie Karamo Touray, who suffered severe injuries after falling into an uncovered Gamtel trench. More recently, a young boy sustained a serious facial injury after his bicycle wheel got stuck in one of these ditches, leading to a crash. These incidents highlight the dangers posed by the unattended work sites and the urgent need for corrective action.

Community Outrage and Calls for Accountability

Residents are demanding that Gamtel take responsibility for the hazardous conditions left behind by its installation teams. They stress that proper safety measures, such as clear warning signs and protective barriers, should be implemented immediately to prevent further harm. Many in the community believe that Gamtel’s negligence is unacceptable and that the company must ensure public safety while carrying out infrastructure projects.

Reacting to reports of serious injury to a boy riding his bicycle who fell into the ditch, Gunjur Ward Councillor Hon. Momodou Charreh Gibba wrote:

“The victims should put up a complaint to NAWEC (Sic) (Gamtel he meant to write) for possible compensation or sue them to court”

Urgent Action Needed

The growing number of injuries caused by these open trenches has placed pressure on Gamtel and local authorities to respond swiftly. The public is urging Gamtel to take immediate steps to cover or mark these dangerous ditches before more people suffer further injuries.
