Scopions of Gambia have narrowly lost to Gabon in Thursday’s first leg of a two leg qualifiers that Gambia needs to win to secure a place in the 2022 AFCON competitions.
Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed victory for Gabon in the 55th when he added to Saint-Etienne’s Denis Bouanga’s 10th minute strike for The Panthers.
Gambia pulled a goal back through Baboucarr Jobe in the 81st minute of the contest meaning the Scorpions fell short of the win needed to boost their chances of a first ever appearance in the AFCON competition.
The win for Gabon means they lead the group with 7 points after three matches while the Scorpions are second on 4 points. The Gambia still have a mathematical chance of qualifying if they win the return leg in Bakau on Monday and other results go their way.
DR Congo are third, behind Gambia with two points while Angola is yet to pick up a point after two matches.
Gambia welcomes Gabon in the second leg, a match that the scorpions must now win to stand any chances of qualifying.
