Gunjur - 16 November | Sports News
In a thrilling quarter-final clash at the 2024 West Coast Zonal Football Championship at Gunjur Nyamina Football Field, Brufut narrowly defeated Gunjur Dabanani 1-0 to advance to the semi-finals. Kajali Conteh’s decisive goal in the 25th minute proved the difference in a game where Gunjur dominated possession but failed to find the back of the net.
From the onset, Gunjur controlled the match, creating multiple chances and pinning Brufut back into their half. However, despite their dominance, Gunjur lacked the clinical edge needed to capitalise on their opportunities. Kajali Conteh’s well-timed strike midway through the first half gave Brufut the lead, and their resolute defense ensured that it remained intact until the final whistle.
Gunjur head coach Sulayman Barrow commended his players for their spirited performance but rued their inability to convert chances. “We dominated the game and created enough chances to win by a large margin, but we were not clinical enough in front of goal,” Barrow said.
Meanwhile, Brufut’s coach, Ebrima Jeng, praised his team’s preparation and defensive organisation. “We knew Gunjur would come at us with everything, but we did our homework. The boys defended brilliantly against a very good Gunjur side,” he said after the game.
In another quarter-final fixture, Sanyang delivered a commanding 2-0 victory over Brikama. Muhammed Ceesay opened the scoring in the 14th minute, and Sanyang’s solid team performance ensured their place in the semi-finals alongside Brufut.
As the championship heats up, the semi-finals promise intense competition, with Brufut and Sanyang among the teams vying for the prestigious West Coast Zonal title following their quarter finals triumph.
For Gunjur, the high hopes of winning this competition for the second time will now wait for another year at least.
