A serving general in The Gambia National Army, Alagi Martin, has revealed Sadibu Hydara who died in custody was tortured “mercilessly” along with Sanna Sabally.
Testifying before the TRRC earlier today, Alagi Martin disclosed that he was tasked alongside other members of the army like deceased Musa Jammeh, better known as Maliamungu, to investigate due to a rash of counter coup attempts.
He added that he led teams sent to Mile 2 prisons to inflict torture with the over-arching aim of extracting information from Sanna Sabally, but denied taking part in the torture of Sadibu Hydara.
“There were different teams. Musa Jammeh was the one who led the team that interrogated Sadibu Hydara. I can’t remember taking part in the interrogation of Sadibu Hydara”.
Put to him by lead counsel Essa Faal that he was using selective memory to evade questions on his part in the torture of Sadibu Hydara, he denied such inference saying he was “telling the truth”.
The TRRC has been set up to look into human rights violations in The Gambia under the exiled former Gambian dictator, Yahya Jammeh from 1994 to 2017.
