Buba Drammeh, a fugitive who escaped from Mile II Central Prisons in 2020, has been captured through a joint security operation involving Gambian and Senegalese authorities. The arrest marks the end of a five-year manhunt that drew significant public attention.

Drammeh was wanted in connection with the murder of Buba Jammeh of Gunjur, which occurred during a violent land dispute between the neighbouring Kombo South communities of Gunjur and Berending in March 2019. The conflict, rooted in longstanding tensions over land ownership and boundaries, escalated into violence that left Jammeh dead and several others injured.
Following his arrest, the Senegalese Gendarmerie officially handed over Drammeh to Gambian law enforcement on Wednesday. Details surrounding the exact circumstances of his capture have not yet been made public, but authorities have confirmed that intelligence sharing and cross-border cooperation played a crucial role.
“This arrest sends a clear message: there is no hiding place for criminals,” a statement from the Gambia Police Force (GPF) declared. “We remain committed to ensuring justice is served and the rule of law is upheld.”
The GPF has assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations continue and court proceedings commence.
Drammeh’s escape in 2020 sparked criticism of prison security and led to calls for systemic reform within the correctional system. His capture is expected to reignite discussions around border security, extradition cooperation, and conflict resolution mechanisms in rural Gambia.
As of now, Drammeh remains in police custody. Formal charges are expected to be filed in the coming days.
