Gunjur UDP Councillor aspirants reach deal over candidacy

The two candidates locked in a battle for supremacy to clinch the nomination for councillor of Gunjur under UDP ticket have reached a deal.

Momodou Charreh Jibba and Buba Touray were both contesting to win the ticket under the United Democratic Party.

Reacting to the developments in this matter, Omar Darboe reported:

“Following the consultation meeting by Gunjur Council of Elders, Youths, prominent personalities and both camps about UDP candidates vying for Councillorship in Gunjur Kombo South, the meeting came to an agreement that one candidate should lead for the oneness and the development of Gunjur. Therefore, Momodou Charreh Jibba is duly accepted by both camps to lead the way. Special thanks goes to camp Buba Touray for their understanding and congratulations to Momodou Charreh Jibba as the chosen one.” Commenting on the deal, Momodou Charreh Jibba enunciated:

“The people have spoken and Gunjur is more united. That is my uttermost concern and my first business as councillor-elect. I must therefore express my sincere appreciation and thanks to the UDP chairpersons of kombo south constituency led by the Momodou Bojang the would be councillor of Sanyang ward. Buba Touray deserves special thanks and commendation for accepting the call for unity. Our council of elders and party militants stood firm to bring all the concerned people to an agreement for unifying Gunjur. We therefore thank everyone of them for their contributions. Let us focus and move on as a United Democratic Party. United we stand, divided we fall”

It could be recalled that Buba Touray has raised concerns about the processs of selection of the Ward councillor in Gunjur through the UDP ticket and has accused the Kombo South MP for interfering in the process. However, these allegations were emphatically refuted by the other aspiring candidate - Momodou Charreh Jibba in a press release published by this medium.

Momodou Charreh Jibba have been chosen to take the UDP ticket in the coming councillor elections.

However, not everyone is convinced that Momodou Charreh Jibba is the right candidate to defend the interest of Gunjur in the face of adversity. Lamin Jassey, an environmental activist questioned Mr Jibba’s position on current challenges facing Gunjur and had this to say in reaction to a post on Facebook regarding the Mr Jibba candidacy for councillor of Gunjur Ward:

“Would have been better if I really know where Mr Momodou Charreh Jibba stands on the issues affecting Gunjur, sand mining and fishmeal factory to be specific there have been lots of campaigns on these inhumane activities. I didn't notice neither his support nor his presence. We don't want the same history to repeat itself and who are the people behind his candidature? we don't need someone who is always sitting on the wall. Just my take.”

Firebrand Sanna Saidy commenting on the same post also weighed in on the subject and had this to say:

“if we elect you mate do not turned into another Kebba K. Barrow, do not opt for silence when the world know Gunjur need your help,do not throw our hope back into our faces and more importantly do not let politicians take our town for granted like they are doing just now with with that silly disgusting Chinese operations on our shores.....stand with the truth, go into Banjul and fight, fight and fight for our beloved Gunjur till you drop.”
