Football: Controversy mars Gunjur Nawettan Fixtures

Delegates and GSC members at the draw

The draw for Gunjur summer club football competition popularly called nawettan was held, but with a controversy surrounding a slot as a single team has registered twice.Black Star F.C of Berending village a team whose participation in this season's Gunjur nawettan has been under scrutiny was represented by two different individuals, both of whom paid the registration fee for Black Star.

However, the two individuals were not truly representing Black Star, but were each sitting on behalf of their respective teams - Under Lion F.C and Smiling Coast F.C who they received money from to buy the slot reserved for Black Star. Addressing the issue, the representative of Smiling Coast Malangnding Jatta produced a letter addressed to Gunjur Sports Committee which he alleged is from Berending Sports Committee. The letter indicated that Black Star cannot take part in this season's Gunjur nawettan due to financial constraints and are therefore giving Black Star's position to Smiling Coast F.C. He said Smiling Coast FC have paid money to the community of Berending for the slot of Black Star while Under Lion paid to an individual. For his part, Buba Drammeh representing Under Lion said Black Star are not a community team. It's a football club which he said are not owned by Berending Sports Committee nor by the officials of the team.
